His scores for " Finian's Rainbow" ("How Are Things in Glocca Morra") and "Clear Day" (both Broadway and movie versions) are among my alltime favorites.Īs for Yves Montand, I like his singing in Clear Day, accent and all (after all he was playing a Frenchmen!). Although Lane didn't write many musicals, the few that he did write count.
Not so with "Clear Day": Alan Jay Lerner wrote sophisticated lyrics and Burton Lane's music is more sublime than the music of HD. For example, as Pauline Kael wrote about "It Only Takes a Moment", the song has lyrics that make one's teeth ache. The latter film had great songs for Streisand, but too often those mediocre numbers for the other characters got in the way. The other reason for my enthusiasm is the score which I like better than e.g. Sure, Lerner wrote the dialog, but it is Barbra who brings her to life like no other actress (even Streep couldn't have pulled it off as beautifully as Barbra).īarbra is simply in her element in period movies and she should have made more of those. And I'm in love with Melinda because she is a unique and wonderful creation of Streisand's. The missing one hour contained mainly flashback scenes of Melinda that wound up on the cutting room floor. The problem is that it's a butchered version of a film that was one hour longer than the version that we know.ĭue to a whole hour missing, the moviegoer quickly realizes there is something missing in this movie and what's missing is mainly character development of the characters in the regression sequences. I hate being negative about Barbra's work,but this film should be in my top 10,but it's not even in my top 1000 Yeah, I am going to get the Bluray,but only to see her beauty in a slightly better definition,though I know it's just a cheap transfer. I haven't watched it in a few years,but the main thing I remember is the amazing costumes and how hot she looks. It does sound an interesting concept for a Bab's musical,but it's not funny,Yves is terrible (in my opinion), the songs,apart from the title track are not memorable and it goes on far too long. I adore the 3 other films you mentioned,and watch them quite often,but not OACD. Overall, something was 'off' with this film as a whole. Her singing was great, of course, but the songs themselves were 'okay'. At times, Streisand tried way too hard with her facial expressions and delivery. The 'funny' didn't come naturally, like it did in 'Funny Girl' or 'Hello Dolly' or 'Whats Up Doc'. I thought it was a cute movie but tried way too hard to be funny.
