
McShee does a lovely duet with her sister Pam on the traditional Suil Agrar, and there’s a bit too much 80’s slap bass on The Open Sea offset by some wonderful guitar by Jansch Thompson had departed by In The Round released two years later replaced by Nigel Portman Smith, and it is a less folky affair as the band try out different sounds and arrangements like on the country tinged Play The Game or Piggot and McShee’s collaboration on the relaxed Sunday Morning Blues. Piggot composes the melody to the delicate Dragonfly, Jansch contributes Sad Lady and there’s a heartfelt version of Milton Nascimento’s eco protest song Mother Earth – a song that was way ahead of its time. There is the traditional Yarrow that they first did on their 1972 Solomon’s Seal record, which was a favourite of Jansch, and the ethereal Child of the Winter, which was McShee’s first stab at offering both lyrics and music to the band. Over the next decade it was a bit of a revolving door in the studio as personnel came and went, and this CD box set collects their five studio albums, and typically for a Cherry Tree collection a load of previously unreleased tracks.ĭanny Thompson rejected the folk rock label that stuck to many of their contemporaries, preferring to call them jazz folk, and their comeback albums have tinges of that amongst the traditional tunes they are so good at interpreting.ġ984’s Open The Door included original members Danny Thompson on double bass and Terry Cox on drums alongside the more jazz influenced Mike Piggot replacing Renbourn on guitar/fiddle, which helped change their sound.
